Is Dress Code a Necessity?
The answer to that question depends entirely on the dress that one
wears. A few people find women wearing jeans and t shirt as provocative, while
some call them ultra-modern. Somehow I can’t understand how much more a woman
should cover herself up. What on earth could possibly go wrong when a boy wears
a t shirt to college? Does the T shirt cause any hindrance to his studies? Are
his grades in direct relation to the T shirt he wears? Character and values are
not reflected by one’s attire, but by their attitude and behaviour. More than 60
years of independence and a student does not have the freedom to wear his/ her
choice of clothes. I’m really beginning to doubt the meaning of the word “independence”.
Will the dress code instill moral values in the students? I don’t know what
moral values a dress code will teach us. I do agree with the fact that first
impression is always the best impression, but who are we out to impress in
college. Do we go to college to impress people or to gain knowledge? There are occasions
when women are dressed inappropriately and men wear t shirts with indecent
graffiti, but that doesn’t mean that everybody would do the same. Pull up that
particular boy/ girl and reprimand them. Why punish the student community with
utterly useless rules? It amounts to say that a man has raped a woman, therefore
all men rape women and all men are rapists. This is what I understand of the
dress code ruling. Is this the kind of values and character that the colleges
want to instill in the students? One person commits a crime and the whole
society is held responsible for the crime?
The news article says, “The directorate of collegiate education, which
is in charge of all arts and science colleges in Tamil Nadu, will soon send a
circular banning students from wearing certain articles of clothing, and giving
their stamp of approval to others.” I wonder how this department is related to
a student’s attire. Maybe they should change their name to “Directorate of
College Attire.” In what way is this department equipped to give a “stamp of
approval” for the students. Does this department deal education or attire?
There are so many people who do not have access to quality education and the
education department runs around giving “stamps of approval” for trivial
issues. There are far more pressing issues than just a person’s attire for the
education department to look into. How long are they going to turn a blind eye
to reality?
